Even though healthy employees are more productive and efficient, offering a workplace wellness program is out of reach for many of these small companies. There are still ways to promote workplace health for your employees in your small business. Here are 3 suggestions:
1. Provide healthy snacks and vending machine selections. Replace high sugar sodas and “juice drinks” with water and sugar-free flavored waters. Unsweetened, flavored teas are also healthy alternatives. Instead of candy and chips, offer snacks such as fresh fruit, nuts, sunflower seeds, and fresh veggies. Provide a refrigerator and microwave to encourage your staff to bring their lunch instead of dining out. Sponsor a contest for employees to bring in the tastiest and healthiest recipe.
2. Encourage your employees to be more active at work by giving out pedometers and offering contests or incentives for number of steps taken each day. Consider making lunch breaks 75 to 90 minutes to allow time for exercise. Try a group walk or other physical activity during lunch or other breaks.
3. Offer health risk assessments once a year. You can hire a service to come provide these checks. They can check weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, etc. They can also review these results with your employees and discuss appropriate interventions. Give prizes or cash incentives for employees that improve cholesterol, weight, or blood pressure from one year to the next.
