The Challenge

Understanding what drives the need for change

As travelers worldwide prepared for the excitement of the 2024 Paris Olympics, Air France faced a pivotal moment at Los Angeles International Airport. The prestigious airline needed to establish its very first lounge presence at LAX, creating a space that would serve as an authentic ambassador of French culture and hospitality. The challenge extended beyond simply providing passenger amenities – this 11,840-square-foot space needed to capture the essence of French elegance while meeting the diverse needs of 172 passengers across multiple experience zones.

The vision called for something extraordinary: a seamless blend of classic French sophistication with modern airport functionality. From business travelers seeking quiet productivity to La Première passengers expecting ultimate luxury, the lounge needed to deliver distinct experiences within a cohesive design narrative. Air France wanted every piece of furniture to contribute to an atmosphere that would make passengers feel they had stepped into a Parisian brasserie, complete with tarmac views and an unmistakable sense of arrival.

Our Approach

How we brought the vision to life

Tangram approached this landmark project as cultural interpreters, translating Air France's French heritage into a carefully curated furniture collection that would speak to international travelers. The design partnership began with understanding how each zone would function – from the bustling brasserie-style dining area to the serene Clarins spa, every space demanded its own personality while maintaining visual harmony throughout.

The furniture selection strategy centered on sculptural statement pieces that would serve as conversation starters and Instagram moments. Artifort's striking Ribbon Chair became an artistic focal point, while high-back seating from Fritz Hansen and Vitra created intimate pockets of privacy within the open environment. The team balanced comfort with style, ensuring that mod-style pieces from Roche Bobois and elegant Louis Poulsen lighting would elevate the entire experience. Each piece was chosen not just for its individual beauty, but for how it would contribute to the larger story of French sophistication meeting California innovation.
