The Challenge

Understanding what drives the need for change

When the Bob and Dolores Hope Foundation and LAX set out to honor a legend's legacy, they faced a unique challenge: creating a space worthy of Bob Hope's 77-year dedication to America's service members. The existing USO center could no longer accommodate the tens of thousands of military families passing through LAX each month, many traveling with young children during emotionally charged deployments and homecomings. The foundation envisioned something unprecedented—the most technologically advanced USO center in existence, doubling the previous space to 7,100 square feet within LAX's iconic Theme Building.

This wasn't just about expansion; it was about transformation. Military families needed dedicated spaces for private moments, children required safe play areas during long layovers, and service members deserved comfortable zones to connect with loved ones back home through video calls. The challenge extended beyond functionality to emotion—how do you create a space that truly feels like home for people caught between duty and family, often during the most stressful moments of their lives?

Our Approach

How we brought the vision to life

Working alongside Gensler, Tangram approached this project as a design partnership rooted in deep understanding of military family needs. The team conducted extensive research into how different user groups—solo travelers, families with infants, children of various ages—would move through and utilize the space throughout their journeys. This insight drove every furniture selection, from intimate Skype nooks equipped with comfortable stools for long video calls home, to adaptable lounge seating that could accommodate a sleeping soldier or a family sharing a meal.

The furniture strategy focused on creating distinct zones within the expansive space, each serving specific emotional and practical needs. Tangram curated pieces from 17 specialized manufacturers, ensuring every item—from children's play furniture to luggage storage solutions—contributed to the overarching goal of comfort and connection. The team selected pieces that could withstand heavy use while maintaining a residential feel, understanding that for many visitors, this USO center would be their first taste of American hospitality after months overseas.
