Understanding what drives the need for change
Following the remarkable success of previous Boston Consulting Group projects nationwide, BCG Chicago faced a unique opportunity to bring their innovative workplace culture to the Midwest. The consulting giant needed a 45,000 square-foot space that could accommodate 100 employees while reflecting their commitment to flexibility, wellness, and collaborative thinking. The challenge wasn't just about creating another office—it was about translating BCG's distinctive approach to problem-solving into a physical environment that could adapt as quickly as their consulting methodologies.
The Chicago location presented specific spatial constraints with irregularly shaped floor plans that traditional linear workstation arrangements couldn't efficiently address. BCG wanted to move beyond conventional office layouts to create a workspace that would maximize every square foot while supporting their teams' need for both focused work and spontaneous collaboration. Most importantly, they sought a design that would prioritize employee wellness and incorporate natural elements, recognizing that their people are their greatest asset in delivering world-class consulting services.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram embarked on a design partnership with Studio Other and Tryba Architects to reimagine what flexible workspace could look like. Rather than forcing rigid linear arrangements into irregular spaces, the team developed an innovative curved workstation system that could flow organically throughout the floor plan. These amorphous clusters were designed to be endlessly reconfigurable, allowing teams to adapt their physical environment as projects evolved and collaboration needs shifted.
The design approach centered on creating purposeful connections between form and function. Each curved workstation incorporated sit-to-stand technology, giving employees control over their work environment and supporting their physical wellness throughout the day. The organic clustering naturally created intimate nooks between workstation groups, which became perfect opportunities for white oak planters that brought biophilic elements directly into the work zones. For formal presentations and client meetings, the team designed statement conference tables with Alpine Mist stone surfaces and bold plinth bases that commanded attention while maintaining BCG's sophisticated aesthetic.
