Understanding what drives the need for change
When Boston Consulting Group decided to establish their Los Angeles presence, they faced an unusual challenge. The space they had their sights on sat at the very top of the City National Plaza's north tower—three floors that had previously served as building maintenance areas. While the location offered spectacular 360-degree views of downtown LA, transforming utilitarian space into a sophisticated consulting environment would require vision and expertise.
BCG needed more than just an office; they required a workspace that reflected their prestigious brand while serving the unique needs of their consulting teams. The initial design concepts were ambitious, featuring premium finishes and height-adjustable workstations throughout. However, when budget realities set in, the project team had to find a way to deliver the quality and functionality BCG demanded without compromising their financial parameters.
How we brought the vision to life
Our design partnership with BCG and Shubin Donaldson began with extensive discovery sessions to understand how the space would actually be used. The breakthrough came when we learned that BCG's consultants were truly nomadic, spending only 25% of their time in the office. This insight completely reshaped our approach.
Rather than designing for full occupancy, we created a flexible ecosystem that accommodated varying work styles and schedules. We developed 210 total work points split between 130 traditional workstations and 80 innovative touchdown spaces. These alternative work areas included standing-height stations integrated into the metal railings, comfortable lounge seating, and semi-private zones scattered throughout the floors. Most importantly, we kept the building's perimeter open, ensuring those breathtaking city views remained accessible to everyone rather than being reserved for corner offices.
