For over three decades, the California Wellness Foundation has tackled some of society's most pressing challenges, working tirelessly to advance health and wellness for underserved communities across the state. When this influential grant maker decided to relocate their headquarters from Woodland Hills to the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, they saw an opportunity to practice what they preached about wellness in their own workspace.
The foundation's leadership understood that supporting organizations focused on healthcare access, quality education, and safe neighborhoods meant starting with their own team of 40 dedicated employees. Their vision was clear: create a workspace that would embody their commitment to wellness through thoughtful ergonomic design. They weren't interested in cutting corners on employee comfort, recognizing that every detail from monitor positioning to keyboard tray adjustability could impact their team's daily experience and long-term health.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram partnered with Wolcott Architecture to translate the foundation's wellness philosophy into a physical workspace that would support their mission-critical work. Understanding that ergonomics wasn't just about checking boxes but about creating an environment where people could thrive, our team carefully selected Steelcase Answer workstations featuring L-shaped height-adjustable desks that offered maximum flexibility for each user's unique needs.
The design process focused on creating varied experiences throughout the space. For the 12 private offices, we curated a thoughtful collection from Steelcase and Coalesse, including Brody WorkLounges for focused work, media:scape technology for seamless collaboration, and premium seating options like the Carl Hansen Oculus and Massaud lounge chairs. The main conference room presented a unique challenge, requiring both upscale aesthetics and practical flexibility. Our solution was the Halcon Motus table system, which delivered traditional elegance while functioning as a mobile training room when needed. Every detail mattered, from monitor arms and task lighting to upholstery selections, because we understood these seemingly small touches would have an outsized impact on daily wellness and team morale.
