Understanding what drives the need for change
The Children’s Health Plano Heart Center Cardiology and Fetal Clinic was designed to address complex challenges in pediatric and fetal cardiology care—where flexibility, privacy, and patient experience are critical. Located within Specialty Center 2 in Plano, TX, the 16,000-square-foot clinic needed to support staff while accommodating patients ranging from infants to expectant mothers.
The core challenge was to create a highly adaptable clinical environment that could evolve with fluctuating patient volumes and care needs. At the same time, the space had to improve patient flow and privacy without compromising collaboration among care teams.
Equally important was delivering a human-centered, inclusive experience. The environment needed to feel welcoming and calming for families navigating complex medical journeys—balancing clinical performance with warmth, comfort, and moments of joy. Furniture played a key role in achieving this, particularly in ensuring safety, accessibility, and flexibility across a wide range of clinical and support spaces.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram partnered with Perkins & Will and Children’s Health to enhance the existing shell space with a comprehensive furniture solution that supports both operational efficiency and a patient-first experience.
Our approach centered on flexibility, inclusivity, and safety. We furnished a wide range of environments—including waiting areas, exam rooms, echo rooms, fetal clinic spaces, care team workstations, touchdown areas, private offices, and support spaces—ensuring each area was tailored to its specific function.
To support the clinic’s innovative onstage/offstage care model, furniture solutions were selected to streamline patient movement while enabling seamless collaboration behind the scenes. Modular and adaptable furnishings allow spaces to expand or contract based on daily needs, supporting the clinic’s “accordion” approach to operations.
Patient-facing areas were designed with comfort and inclusivity in mind. The furniture package includes a variety of seating types—from lounge chairs and ottomans to family-style arrangements and playful elements—ensuring every visitor feels accommodated. For example, waiting areas incorporate soft seating, flexible layouts, and engaging elements like small-scale animal seating to create a welcoming, less clinical atmosphere .
Across all environments, furniture with soft edges and durable materials enhances safety—especially important for pediatric care. In exam and clinical spaces, ergonomic stools, sit-to-stand desks, and integrated work surfaces support both caregivers and patients, improving efficiency and comfort .
