Understanding what drives the need for change
Children's Hospital of Orange County had earned recognition as one of the nation's best children's hospitals, but their flagship Orange campus faced a critical transition. The hospital needed to relocate their pharmacy operations to a new location, creating an opportunity to reimagine how this essential service would support their pediatric patients and medical staff. The challenge extended beyond simply moving equipment - CHOC needed a pharmacy space that could meet the rigorous demands of pharmaceutical operations while maintaining the specialized requirements of a pediatric healthcare environment.
The complexity of the project required furniture solutions that could bridge two distinct worlds: the precision and durability needed for pharmaceutical work, and the office environments where administrative and consultation activities would take place. CHOC wanted to avoid the complications of managing multiple vendors and instead sought a single, trusted partner who could understand both their lab-grade requirements and their broader workspace needs.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram partnered closely with c|a ARCHITECTS to become CHOC's unified furniture solution provider, eliminating the complexity of coordinating multiple vendors across different furniture categories. Understanding that pharmaceutical spaces demand specialized expertise, we drew upon our partnership with Symbiote, whose four decades of experience in lab environments made them an ideal collaborator for this unique healthcare application.
Our design approach focused on creating a comprehensive furniture ecosystem that could seamlessly support both the technical demands of pharmacy operations and the collaborative needs of the healthcare team. We specified Symbiote's laboratory solutions for their proven durability and safety standards, while integrating Steelcase products for office and administrative areas. This strategy ensured that every piece of furniture - from specialized lab surfaces that could withstand rigorous pharmaceutical processes to ergonomic workstations for staff - worked together as a cohesive solution tailored specifically for CHOC's pediatric pharmacy environment.
