Understanding what drives the need for change
When Tangram began working with the Chula Vista Elementary School District, they faced a fundamental question about modern learning spaces: how do you create libraries that serve every type of young learner? Across ten elementary schools in San Diego County—from Casillas to Wolf Canyon—the existing libraries weren't meeting the diverse needs of students who learn differently. Some children thrive in collaborative group settings, others need quiet corners for reflection, and many require tactile experiences to concentrate effectively.
The district recognized that traditional library setups with rows of tables and chairs couldn't accommodate the full spectrum of learning activities happening in these spaces. Students needed environments that could seamlessly transition from story time circles to individual reading nooks, from research collaborations to creative writing sessions. The challenge wasn't just about furniture—it was about creating spaces that would empower students to choose their optimal learning environment and develop the agency to understand how they learn best.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram partnered with education furniture specialist NorvaNivel to design libraries that would function as flexible learning ecosystems rather than static reading rooms. The approach centered on creating distinct zones within each space, each serving different learning modes and preferences. Curved Amphi seating provided tiered gathering spots perfect for group reading sessions, while CrashPod pillows and WorkPad cushions created comfortable floor-level areas where students could settle in for solo reading or quiet reflection.
The design team paid special attention to tactile learners, incorporating GrassyOtt Domes that provide the sensory input some students need to focus effectively. Conclave seating combined comfortable curved designs with built-in storage, maximizing functionality in compact spaces. Traditional work surfaces weren't forgotten—Fablio tables paired with RocerOtt10 stools offered adaptable stations for both collaborative projects and individual writing tasks. This thoughtful furniture selection created libraries where students could move naturally between different types of learning activities throughout their visits.
