Understanding what drives the need for change
The City of Roanoke faced a pivotal moment in its civic evolution. Their existing municipal facilities had become outdated and could no longer support the growing needs of their police department, court system, and administrative staff. City leaders envisioned a new Municipal and Court Building that would serve as more than just functional space—it needed to embody their commitment to modern civic service while building trust within the community.
The challenge extended beyond simple replacement. The facility needed to accommodate the unique operational demands of 24/7 police work, formal court proceedings, and daily administrative functions, all while presenting a professional yet approachable face to the public. Every decision, from the lobby's first impression to the durability of interview room furniture, would reflect the city's values and operational excellence. The space had to balance security requirements with accessibility, professionalism with warmth, and immediate functionality with long-term durability.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram's design partnership with the City of Roanoke began with listening. Through comprehensive work sessions with city officials, police leadership, and department heads, the team uncovered the specific operational needs that would drive every furniture decision. Chief Jeff Williams and his team shared insights about daily workflows, security considerations, and the importance of creating spaces that support both high-stress situations and community engagement.
The design solution spanned the entire facility with purposeful intention. Court areas received seating that balanced comfort with security protocols, while training rooms featured flexible configurations to support ongoing police education. Administrative offices prioritized ergonomic wellness and workflow efficiency, recognizing that productive city employees better serve their community. The crown jewel became a custom reception station—a bespoke piece that merged sophisticated millwork with practical functionality, creating an anchor point that exemplified the city's vision for lasting professionalism. Every manufacturer selection, from Steelcase to Kimball to SitOnIt, was chosen not just for immediate performance but for the ability to withstand decades of civic service.
