Understanding what drives the need for change
When rapid population growth in Plano, Texas created an urgent need for expanded pediatric healthcare services, this confidential healthcare client faced a monumental challenge. Their existing facility could no longer accommodate the growing number of children requiring specialized care, forcing families to travel long distances for treatment. The organization envisioned something extraordinary: a 395,000-square-foot tower that would more than double their capacity while creating a healing environment unlike any other in the region.
The new facility needed to be far more than a typical hospital expansion. Leaders wanted to honor Texas's natural heritage while addressing the unique emotional and physical needs of pediatric patients and their families. From emergency departments where anxious parents would wait for news, to therapy rooms where children would work toward recovery, every space required furniture that could withstand heavy use while providing comfort during some of life's most challenging moments. The vision called for a patient-centric environment where nature-inspired design would support healing, complete with views of pasturing horses, White Rock Creek, and a historic Texas red oak tree.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram's design partnership centered on understanding that pediatric healthcare furniture serves multiple masters: the clinical staff who depend on functionality, the children who need comfort and engagement, and the families seeking solace during difficult times. Our team worked closely with the client to develop comprehensive furniture solutions that would support their nature-inspired healing philosophy while meeting the rigorous demands of a high-volume medical facility.
Across the facility's diverse environments, we specified contract-grade furniture that balanced durability with warmth. In reception areas, vibrant seating created welcoming first impressions for anxious families. Patient rooms received ergonomic chairs and multi-functional sleeper sofas that could accommodate parents staying overnight with their children. Nurse stations featured efficient workstations designed to enhance caregiver productivity during long shifts. Perhaps most importantly, family and child life spaces incorporated thoughtfully designed seating and play areas that would engage young patients and provide moments of normalcy within the clinical environment. Each furniture selection supported the facility's unique Texas-themed floor designs and integration with natural lighting systems that help regulate patient sleep cycles.
