Understanding what drives the need for change
When a leading healthcare provider needed to relocate their pediatric clinic to a new Irvine facility, they faced a design challenge that went far beyond typical medical office furnishing. The space needed to transform from a sterile, institutional environment into one that would genuinely welcome children and their anxious families while maintaining the clinical efficiency their medical staff required.
The timeline was unforgiving—the clinic needed to reopen quickly to serve their young patients without interruption. Budget constraints added another layer of complexity, as every dollar needed to deliver maximum impact. Most critically, the space had to bridge two seemingly opposing needs: creating a playful, comforting atmosphere that would ease children's fears while providing healthcare professionals with the ergonomic support and functional efficiency they needed to deliver exceptional care. This dual requirement meant rethinking traditional clinical design from the ground up.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram's design partnership began with a fundamental shift in perspective—viewing the space through the eyes of a child rather than just the operational needs of a clinic. The team curated a carefully balanced furniture strategy that wove together trusted healthcare manufacturers like SitOnIt, Arcadia, and BluDot to create distinct experiences across every area of the clinic.
In the waiting area, the design team moved away from rigid, institutional seating toward soft, modular lounge pieces in vibrant colors and curved forms that invited exploration rather than apprehension. Exam rooms received a thoughtful blend of practical medical casework with small-scale guest seating that maintained a calm, reassuring atmosphere. Staff areas were equipped with height-adjustable workstations and ergonomic task chairs that supported both focused work and patient consultations. Throughout the space, the furniture selections prioritized both durability and emotional comfort, ensuring that every piece could withstand the demands of healthcare use while contributing to an environment where young patients could feel safe and supported from the moment they arrived.
