The Challenge

Understanding what drives the need for change

A major insurance company operating across nine floors in Woodland Hills faced a critical decision about their workplace culture. Their employees were trapped behind towering cubicle walls that created silos and stifled collaboration—the exact opposite of what their evolving business model required. With 1,200 team members spread across 130,000 square feet, the outdated workspace was hindering productivity and innovation at every level.

The leadership team recognized that their physical environment needed to mirror their commitment to transparency and teamwork. They envisioned a complete transformation from isolated workstations to an open, dynamic environment where spontaneous collaboration could flourish. The challenge wasn't just about removing walls—it was about reimagining how their people could work together more effectively while still providing the focused work areas and professional meeting spaces their insurance operations demanded.

Our Approach

How we brought the vision to life

Tangram approached this massive undertaking as a strategic design partnership, working closely with the client to orchestrate a carefully phased transformation that wouldn't disrupt daily operations. The design team conducted extensive employee interviews and workflow analyses to understand how different departments functioned, from claims processing to executive decision-making. This research informed every furniture selection and space allocation decision.

The solution centered on creating a fluid ecosystem of work environments. Instead of uniform cubicles, Tangram introduced varied workstation configurations that could adapt to different work styles and collaboration needs. Integrated meeting spaces were woven throughout the floorplan, allowing teams to gather spontaneously without booking formal conference rooms. The training center received specialized furniture to support learning and development, while executive offices balanced privacy with accessibility. Even the cafeteria was reimagined as an extension of the collaborative workspace, encouraging cross-departmental connections during breaks and informal meetings.

There’s no such thing as a quick meeting. We spend more time collaborating today than ever before. Squirming, fatigue, and loss of focus are unavoidable. Let’s face it. Working with others requires a completely different set of postures, and thus, a completely different kind of chair. One that helps keep you comfortable and focused in collaborative settings like conference and training rooms.
