Understanding what drives the need for change
When Critical Role outgrew their humble beginnings as friends gathering around a table to tell epic stories, they faced a unique design challenge. The company had evolved into a 100% independent, creator-owned media powerhouse producing original shows, comic series, art books, and animated content. Their new 2,700 square foot Burbank office needed to reflect this creative transformation while supporting their diverse team of voice actors, producers, and content creators.
The Critical Role team had one clear directive: their workspace should embody who they are as a media organization. They wanted visitors and employees alike to immediately understand the company's creative spirit and storytelling mission. The challenge was translating their varied entertainment offerings and collaborative creative process into a physical environment that would inspire their team while providing the functionality needed for modern media production.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram partnered with JLP Design to create a workspace that would tell Critical Role's story through intentional design choices. Rather than creating a uniform office environment, we embraced the company's creative diversity by designing distinct themed environments throughout the space. Each room became its own character in the larger narrative, featuring unique color palettes and design aesthetics that reflected different aspects of the company's creative output.
We carefully curated furniture solutions from West Elm, Steelcase, and SitOnIt to ensure each themed space maintained both personality and performance. The workstations, conference furniture, and ancillary pieces were selected to support various work styles while enhancing the distinctive character of each environment. This approach allowed every team member to find spaces that resonated with their creative process, whether they needed collaborative energy or focused concentration.
