Understanding what drives the need for change
DLR Group faced a pivotal moment in their Los Angeles presence—bringing together teams that had been scattered across Santa Monica and Pasadena into a single, unified workspace. This consolidation wasn't just about real estate efficiency; it was about forging a new identity that honored both the vibrant spirit of Los Angeles and DLR Group's progressive position in the design industry. The challenge went deeper than typical office moves, as the firm needed to create a space that celebrated the eclectic mix of individuals joining forces while supporting their diverse work styles.
The traditional workplace hierarchy simply wouldn't work for this forward-thinking architecture firm. With half their staff identifying as nomadic workers who needed flexibility in where and how they worked, DLR Group required a completely reimagined approach to office design. They needed a space that would promote spatial equity, break down conventional barriers, and create an activity-based environment where choice and collaboration could flourish. The goal was to design an office that reflected their values while providing the functional flexibility their diverse team demanded.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram's design partnership with DLR Group centered on a bold inversion of traditional workplace hierarchy. Instead of placing executive offices in coveted corner locations, the design clustered private offices around the building's core, freeing up prime perimeter space for the entire team to enjoy. This purposeful decision created shared collaboration areas in the most desirable spots, reinforcing the firm's commitment to spatial equity and collective success.
The design team developed a sophisticated workplace identity framework that recognized four distinct worker types: Global Nomads, Local Nomads, Host Residents, and Nested Residents. Each group received tailored solutions for desking, storage, and specialized equipment needs. Tangram created a rich ecosystem of spaces including the 'LA Love' café featuring locally sourced materials, a quiet 'Library' for focused work, a biophilic 'Wellness Pod' for restoration, and an experimental 'FabLab' for hands-on innovation. Even the two remaining private offices were designed with secure storage to transform into meeting spaces when executives traveled, maximizing space utilization and maintaining the democratic spirit of the design.
