Frisco Public Library
A flexible public library thoughtfully designed with each user in mind
Understanding what drives the need for change
When the Frisco Public Library outgrew its original space, the community needed a new home that could accommodate three times the capacity while serving as the sixth largest library in Texas. The chosen location presented a unique opportunity—an adaptive reuse project that would transform a former manufacturing facility that had once produced both rockets and chicken nuggets into a vibrant community hub celebrating the ecological history of the Blackland Prairie.
The library's mission extended far beyond traditional book lending, encompassing interactive programming from children's clubs and gaming areas to poetry workshops and yoga classes. This diverse range of activities demanded workspace solutions that could adapt to unpredictable future needs. As Library Director Shelley Holley noted, anticipating how people will use libraries in the future remains challenging, making flexibility the essential design requirement for supporting both quiet individual work and dynamic community gatherings.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram Interiors embraced maximum flexibility as the fundamental design principle, recognizing that library spaces must evolve with changing community needs and usage patterns. The team collaborated extensively with experienced library staff who brought valuable insights from observing how visitors actually interact with library environments—from those seeking social lounging spaces to individuals requiring focused work areas.
The solution centered on modular furniture systems that could be reconfigured into countless arrangements. Reading pods, workstations, reception areas, and private offices were all designed with adaptability in mind, allowing the space to transform seamlessly from quiet study zones to energetic community meeting areas. This approach ensured that the library could respond to future trends and changing user behaviors without requiring major renovations or furniture replacements.
