The Challenge

Understanding what drives the need for change

HRL Laboratories faced a pivotal moment in their workspace evolution. Their Lost Hills Hub had served its purpose as a traditional office filled with individual workstations, but the company recognized that their team's needs had fundamentally shifted. The static, compartmentalized environment no longer supported the dynamic collaboration and varied work styles that drive innovation in their industry.

The leadership team envisioned something entirely different for their new Agoura Hills location – a space that would mirror the natural beauty and diversity of Southern California itself. Nestled between their Malibu and Calabasas locations, this new hub needed to capture the essence of the California landscape while providing employees with genuine choice in how and where they worked throughout their day. They wanted to move beyond the one-size-fits-all approach to create an environment where people could seamlessly transition between focused work, collaborative sessions, casual conversations, and relaxed dining experiences.

Our Approach

How we brought the vision to life

Tangram partnered with M&G Architects and AGID to bring this California-inspired vision to life through thoughtful furniture curation and space planning. Our team approached the project like painters working with a natural palette, selecting pieces from premium manufacturers including Steelcase, Arcadia, Hightower, and BuzziSpace that would complement the architectural vision while serving distinct functional needs.

The design story unfolded through carefully chosen colors and forms that celebrated the surrounding landscape. Sunset hues warmed collaborative spaces, ocean-inspired blues created calm in focus areas, and bold grass greens energized social zones. We embraced biophilic design principles throughout, incorporating living elements and organic shapes that blur the line between indoor and outdoor environments. Playful touches like BuzziSpace's distinctive BuzziCactus installations served dual purposes – improving acoustics while adding sculptural interest that reflects California's natural character.
