Understanding what drives the need for change
When renowned architecture firm HOK decided to relocate their Los Angeles studio to the vibrant Arts District, they faced a unique opportunity to practice what they preach. Known for designing inclusive, neurodiverse work environments, HOK needed their new 20,000 square foot space in ROW DTLA to embody their own design philosophy while supporting their hybrid workforce.
The challenge extended beyond simply furnishing an office. HOK required a workspace that could adapt to diverse sensory needs, from team members who thrive in collaborative, energy-rich environments to those who perform best in quiet, focused settings. The raw industrial character of their Arts District location offered stunning concrete surfaces and expansive windows, but also presented the challenge of creating warmth and comfort within a utilitarian shell. Most critically, every design decision needed to align with HOK's commitment to sustainability and wellness, setting an example for the very principles they advocate for their clients.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram's design partnership with HOK centered on creating truly flexible 'floating' workspaces where no seat was permanently assigned, allowing team members to choose environments that matched their daily needs and work styles. The foundation of this approach was the AMQ Kinex desk system, selected for its perfect balance of visual appeal, height-adjustability, and cost-effectiveness. This timeless solution provided the functional backbone for an office that needed to perform as beautifully as it looked.
Every area of the 20,000 square foot space received thoughtful attention, from the welcoming lobby to intimate huddle rooms, wellness spaces, and the collaborative library. The furniture selection reflected the dynamic character of the surrounding Arts District, combining industrial strength with artisan-level craftsmanship. Tangram carefully curated finishes and colorways that would complement the existing concrete and steel while introducing the warmth and texture essential for human comfort. The result was a comprehensive furniture solution that supported HOK's multi-purpose vision while honoring the building's historic character.
