Illumina I3 Campus
Tangram was contracted to provide glass fronts on the totality of the i3 project.
Understanding what drives the need for change
When Illumina first began as a startup with dreams of transforming human health through genomics, few could have predicted they would become the world leader in unlocking the power of the genome. But success brings its own challenges. Headquartered in San Diego, the company found themselves rapidly outgrowing their current facilities, with expansion needs that would soon exceed their existing space.
The company needed more than just additional square footage—they required a campus that could house their growing team while fostering the same spirit of connectivity, innovation, and collaboration that had driven their remarkable growth. The vision was ambitious: create a new headquarters that would serve as a launching pad for the next chapter of genomic discovery, all while maintaining operational continuity with their existing operations.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram Interiors joined forces with Illumina and Perkins+Will to bring this vision to life through the i3 campus project—three strategically designed 100,000 square foot buildings positioned just a quarter mile from their current headquarters. The proximity wasn't coincidental; it ensured seamless operational continuity while providing room for exponential growth.
The design centered on creating flexible, customizable spaces that could evolve with Illumina's changing needs. Drawing on our deepening partnership with Muraflex, we introduced their advanced MIMO glazing technology throughout the entire campus. This wasn't simply about aesthetics—the superior performance of MIMO over standard interior glazing created the transparency and openness essential for collaborative scientific work. The campus design incorporated multiple amenity spaces, a fitness center, and a commercial kitchen, creating an environment where innovation could flourish both during work hours and beyond.
