Understanding what drives the need for change
Juno Therapeutics faced a pivotal moment in their growth story. After operating across multiple scattered locations in Seattle, the pioneering cancer immunotherapy company needed to unite their teams under one roof to accelerate their life-saving research. The consolidation represented more than just a real estate move—it was about creating a headquarters that could embody their mission while fostering the deep collaboration essential to breakthrough scientific work.
The challenge extended beyond typical office planning. Juno needed spaces that could seamlessly integrate laboratory functions with traditional office environments, all while maintaining the precision and safety standards critical to therapeutic development. They envisioned a headquarters that would not only impress visiting partners and investors but also inspire their own teams daily, reflecting the grace and authenticity that matched the transformative nature of their work in cancer treatment.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram Studio partnered closely with Juno Therapeutics and Flad Architects to craft a comprehensive workspace transformation across nine floors of their new 195,000-square-foot headquarters. Rather than defaulting to standard furniture solutions, the team explored custom design options and discovered a surprising advantage: the bespoke approach actually proved more cost-effective while delivering precisely what Juno needed.
The design process centered on understanding how Juno's scientists, researchers, and business teams actually worked together. Every element was purposefully designed to support both individual focus and collaborative breakthroughs, from specialized workstations that accommodated unique research workflows to conference rooms equipped with advanced audiovisual technology for seamless communication with global partners. The team created varied meeting environments—from formal boardrooms for executive decisions to flexible kanban spaces for agile project planning—ensuring that every interaction could happen in the most appropriate setting.
