Understanding what drives the need for change
When Kawasaki Motors set out to create their new 120,000 square foot headquarters in Foothill Ranch, California, they had an ambitious vision that would challenge conventional workplace design. Rather than accepting a standard corporate layout, Kawasaki made an extraordinary commitment to employee empowerment: every single team member would have the opportunity to choose their own workstation from seven carefully crafted configurations.
This employee-centric approach created a complex puzzle that required meticulous planning and flawless execution. With over 250 workstations to customize and install according to individual preferences, the project demanded extensive design documentation showing each workstation in its exact final location. The tight completion deadline added another layer of complexity, requiring precise coordination with contractors and trades while some installations had to proceed in areas where lighting systems weren't yet complete.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram Interiors partnered with H. Hendy Associates and Hahn Partners to transform Kawasaki's vision into reality through careful planning and innovative problem-solving. The team developed comprehensive design documentation that mapped each employee's workstation selection to its specific location within the expansive space, creating a detailed roadmap for the complex installation process.
The design solution centered on Steelcase Answer workstations paired with media:scape meeting and conferencing technology, complemented by thoughtfully selected ancillary furnishings. Beyond the workstations, the team created welcoming spaces including a striking reception lobby, versatile conference rooms, and an inviting café area. Despite the logistical challenges of coordinating hundreds of customized installations and working around incomplete building systems, Tangram's team maintained close synchronization with all trades to ensure the project stayed on track and met Kawasaki's ambitious timeline.
