The Challenge

Understanding what drives the need for change

Loyola Marymount University faced a common challenge in higher education: their campus library and communal spaces needed to evolve with how students actually learn and collaborate today. The traditional library model wasn't meeting the diverse needs of their student body, who required flexible spaces that could seamlessly transition between focused individual work and dynamic group collaboration.

The university recognized that their learning environments needed to reflect the Jesuit tradition of community and intellectual engagement while embracing modern educational approaches. They sought to create purposeful spaces that would encourage both scholarly reflection and collaborative discovery, transforming underutilized areas into vibrant hubs of academic activity across 20,000 square feet of their campus.

Our Approach

How we brought the vision to life

Tangram Interiors partnered with Studio Other to reimagine how students interact with their learning environment. The centerpiece of this transformation became the innovative Triad stations – thoughtfully designed three-sided collaboration hubs that integrated seamlessly with existing library stacks. Each station featured a central post supporting three work surfaces, creating natural gathering points that encouraged spontaneous collaboration while maintaining visual connection to the broader library space.

The success of the Triad concept inspired a comprehensive approach to the entire space. The design team extended this cohesive aesthetic throughout multiple communal areas, creating individual focused work zones equipped with integrated power and data access. In the campus cafeteria, they introduced modern Coalesse seating that bridged the gap between casual dining and informal study spaces. This holistic strategy allowed Tangram to coordinate across all their divisions, ensuring every element worked together to support LMU's academic mission.
