When Medical City McKinney announced plans to expand their healthcare services with a dedicated 24,000-square-foot women's hospital, they faced a unique design challenge. This wasn't just another medical facility—it was a space where life's most precious moments would unfold, from prenatal consultations to NICU care to postpartum recovery. The facility needed to balance the sterile functionality required in healthcare settings with the warmth and comfort that expectant mothers, new families, and their loved ones deserved during such vulnerable times.
The hospital's leadership understood that furniture choices would directly impact patient experience and healing outcomes. They needed contract-grade solutions that could withstand rigorous infection control protocols while creating environments that felt more like home than hospital. From intimate lactation rooms to bustling nurse stations, each space required thoughtful consideration of how furniture could support both the emotional journey of families and the demanding workflow of healthcare professionals.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram developed a comprehensive design partnership with Carolina Healthcare Furniture, recognizing that every piece of furniture would play a role in the healing process. Our team conducted detailed space planning sessions to understand the unique requirements of each care environment—the ergonomic needs of nurses working long shifts, the comfort requirements for families spending extended time in waiting areas, and the specialized furniture needed to support delicate NICU operations.
Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, we curated distinct furniture solutions for eight different care environments. In the NICU bays and private rooms, we selected pieces that would allow families to bond with their newborns while supporting medical staff efficiency. For the VIP suites and postpartum rooms, we prioritized home-like comfort without compromising on durability or infection control standards. Throughout the facility, we maintained a consistent aesthetic that promoted calm and healing while ensuring every piece met the rigorous demands of a modern healthcare environment.
