Understanding what drives the need for change
Medical City Plano's critical care unit faced a common healthcare dilemma: how to create a supportive environment for families enduring the stress of round-the-clock patient care. The existing waiting room failed to meet the emotional and practical needs of visitors who often spent days at the hospital, lacking both comfort and privacy during their most vulnerable moments.
With over 70 medical specialties operating within the facility, the waiting area saw constant traffic from families requiring everything from quick consultation spaces to extended rest areas. The challenge extended beyond simple comfort—the space needed to maintain strict medical-grade cleanliness standards while breaking away from the sterile, institutional atmosphere that often amplifies anxiety during medical crises.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram Interiors developed a flexible zoning strategy that transformed the 1,200-square-foot space into distinct areas for different family needs. The centerpiece of this approach featured OFS Heya Retreat pods—semi-enclosed furniture systems that create the intimacy of private rooms while maintaining the openness required for staff supervision. These modular units include integrated power outlets, work surfaces, and comfortable seating, allowing families to establish temporary bases during extended stays.
The design balanced privacy with accessibility through a careful furniture selection that included Carolina's Modern Amenity and Saven Rocker chairs for relaxation zones, paired with OFS Harpin chairs and Nineteen20 tables for dining and work activities. Mobile elements like X&O occasional tables and Boost ottomans provide families the flexibility to reconfigure spaces according to their immediate needs. Every piece features medical-grade fabrics and finishes that withstand frequent sanitization, while a calming palette of blues and neutrals creates visual continuity with the hospital's existing design language.

We even took Heya to a more portable level with Heya mobile, creating the option to adjust the space according to employee needs throughout the day. Heya’s comfort and visual softness allow these small rooms to blend seamlessly into the office, while still providing the closeness and privacy people need to really focus.
Saven
We designed Saven to provide ideal support for new mothers and their babies. You can adjust Saven’s arms independently to easily find a comfortable position, and its gentle motion calms and soothes. But Saven isn’t limited to this setting. From corporate wellness rooms to long-term care, nurseries, home health, or other public and patient spaces, Saven provides a resting place with subtle movement that helps people restore.
