Understanding what drives the need for change
When the iconic Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles needed a complete flooring transformation, the stakes couldn't have been higher. This entertainment powerhouse hosts some of the industry's biggest events, from award shows to major concerts, accommodating over 7,000 guests across one of the largest indoor stages in the United States. The venue's diverse spaces presented a complex puzzle: high-traffic public areas requiring acoustic performance and durability, VIP dressing rooms demanding luxury finishes, and backstage catering areas needing easy maintenance solutions.
Designer Brian Oshima from Oshima Studio faced an almost impossible timeline—just two days to develop a comprehensive carpeting plan for nearly 20,000 square yards of space. With budget constraints adding pressure and the venue's operational schedule leaving no room for delays, the project demanded a design partner who could deliver both creative solutions and flawless execution without disrupting the theater's packed performance calendar.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram's team immediately recognized this wasn't just a flooring project—it was about creating the foundation for countless memorable experiences. Working hand-in-hand with Oshima Studio, Steiner Bros Construction, and AEG, they developed a strategic approach that treated each zone according to its unique demands. The design team specified 11,000 square yards of premium Bentley Mills broadloom and carpet tile for the theater bowl, lobbies, and hallways, selecting materials that would provide acoustic benefits while withstanding the constant flow of excited audiences.
For the behind-the-scenes areas where stars prepare and catering teams work tirelessly, Tangram chose 6,000 square feet of sophisticated Karndean LVT. This decision balanced the need for easy maintenance in high-activity spaces with the elevated aesthetic that VIP guests expect. Throughout the compressed timeline, Tangram's collaborative approach meant solving design challenges in real-time, ensuring every detail aligned with both the venue's operational needs and Oshima's creative vision.
