The Challenge

Understanding what drives the need for change

Rady Children’s Southwest Outpatient Tower (formerly CHOC) represents a major step forward in pediatric healthcare—bringing together more than 25 specialty clinics, research, imaging, and support services into a single, 330,000-square-foot destination in Orange, CA.

The challenge extended far beyond scale. The project required a furniture solution that balanced budget, durability, and design excellence while supporting highly specialized clinical environments. Every space—from exam rooms and waiting areas to administrative offices—needed to function seamlessly for both caregivers and families, while accommodating evolving healthcare technologies and workflows.

At the same time, the environment needed to feel distinctly child-centered and welcoming. Guided by a vision to create a space that sparks imagination and reduces stress, the design called for bright, engaging interiors with themed elements and interactive experiences. Furniture played a critical role in reinforcing this vision—helping transform a clinical setting into one that feels supportive, comforting, and even joyful for children and their families.

Our Approach

How we brought the vision to life

Tangram partnered with CannonDesign and Rady Children’s to deliver a comprehensive furniture solution across the entire tower—aligning clinical performance with a warm, human-centered design approach.

We furnished all areas of the facility, including administration, private offices, exam rooms, waiting areas, and collaborative spaces. Our approach focused on selecting high-performance products from a wide range of manufacturers—including Steelcase, Coalesse, Krug, Arcadia, OFS, and others—to meet the diverse needs of healthcare environments while maintaining a cohesive design language.

A key priority was supporting the family-friendly experience at the heart of the project. Furniture selections were thoughtfully aligned with the building’s vibrant interiors, themed floors, and interactive elements—helping to create spaces that feel approachable and engaging for young patients. Waiting areas and shared spaces were designed for comfort and ease, while clinical environments prioritized durability, efficiency, and flexibility for care teams.

Throughout the process, our team carefully balanced cost considerations with long-term value, ensuring the project delivered both performance and design integrity at scale.
