Understanding what drives the need for change
The Trade Desk was riding a wave of explosive growth in the digital advertising technology space. While their headquarters thrived in the laid-back beach town atmosphere of Ventura, California, their expanding team needed a new southern outpost in Irvine to accommodate their rapid scaling. This wasn't just about finding more square footage—it was about translating their unique company culture to an entirely different city with its own distinct character.
The challenge was multifaceted: how do you capture the relaxed, familial spirit that made The Trade Desk special while honoring Irvine's reputation for clean sophistication? The leadership team knew their new 12,000 square foot space needed to feel authentically Trade Desk—open, transparent, and collaborative—while also reflecting the polished professionalism that would resonate in their new market. They wanted a workspace that would attract top talent and support diverse work styles, from focused individual work to dynamic team collaboration.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram's design partnership with The Trade Desk began with understanding the delicate balance between brand authenticity and local market appeal. We developed a design philosophy that honored their beach town DNA while embracing Irvine's refined aesthetic sensibilities. Our approach centered on creating a bright, welcoming foundation using crisp white as the primary palette—a choice that felt both coastal and contemporary.
The real artistry came in the strategic application of The Trade Desk's secondary brand colors as purposeful accents throughout the space. Rather than overwhelming the clean aesthetic, these color pops became moments of brand personality that energized different zones. We carefully curated furniture solutions for each functional area, from open office benching systems that encouraged collaboration to sophisticated conference tables that commanded respect in client meetings. Every piece was selected not just for its individual merit, but for how it contributed to the cohesive narrative of a company that values both innovation and approachability.
