The Challenge

Understanding what drives the need for change

After more than two decades in the same Los Angeles office, Tortoise Capital Advisors found themselves at a pivotal moment. The financial services firm was not only relocating their workspace but also transitioning from Bradford & Marzec to their new Tortoise Capital Advisors brand identity. Their existing office had served them well, but it no longer reflected who they were becoming as a company or supported the collaborative culture they wanted to foster.

The leadership team recognized that this relocation, though less than a mile from their previous location, represented an opportunity to completely reimagine how their team worked together. They needed a space that would honor their professional reputation in financial services while creating an environment that encouraged communication and collaboration among their advisors and support staff. The challenge was creating a workspace that felt both sophisticated and approachable, reflecting their evolved brand while supporting their commitment to client service excellence.

Our Approach

How we brought the vision to life

Tangram's design partnership with Tortoise Capital Advisors began with deep conversations about the firm's culture, work processes, and aspirations for their new brand identity. The design team recognized that this wasn't just an office move, but a transformation that needed to align the physical environment with the company's evolving identity and collaborative goals.

The design strategy centered on creating a contemporary, light-filled workspace that would feel dramatically different from their previous environment. Tangram implemented a sophisticated blue and gray color palette that complemented the new Tortoise branding while maintaining the professional gravitas essential to a financial services firm. Every design decision, from the clean architectural lines to the strategic placement of collaborative zones, was made to maximize natural light penetration and create sight lines that would encourage spontaneous interaction and communication throughout the space.

Amia

The Amia chair was designed by Steelcase, in collaboration with industrial designer,Thomas Overthun of IDEO. “Innovations such as the LiveLumbar™ mechanism have been incorporated into the overall shape rather than made explicit on the chair’s outside. Technology quietly serving, rather than drawing attention to itself, seemed appealing in the context of today’s information overload. This, combined with an attention to detail and materials, allowed us to realize Amia’s calm and refined design.” — Thomas Overthun
