The Challenge

Understanding what drives the need for change

The University of California, Irvine faced an ambitious goal: creating a space that would break down the traditional silos between scientific disciplines and foster unprecedented collaboration. Their vision for the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building went far beyond constructing another research facility. They needed a 200,000-square-foot environment that would actively encourage researchers from different fields to cross paths, share ideas, and work together in ways that hadn't been possible before.

The challenge was multifaceted. The building needed to accommodate an incredibly diverse range of activities—from wet and dry laboratories requiring specialized equipment to computer labs, research offices, classrooms, and informal collaboration spaces. Each area demanded different furniture solutions that could withstand intensive use while supporting various modes of learning, research, and social interaction. Most importantly, every design decision needed to reinforce UCI's culture of innovation and interdisciplinary thinking, creating an environment where breakthrough discoveries could naturally emerge from unexpected connections between researchers.

Our Approach

How we brought the vision to life

Tangram embarked on a comprehensive design partnership with LMN Architects and UCI, recognizing that this project required furniture solutions as innovative as the research that would take place within the building. Our team approached each space type with careful consideration of how furniture could facilitate different types of collaboration and learning. We selected pieces from trusted manufacturers including Steelcase, Orangebox, Davis, and others, prioritizing durability and adaptability to ensure the furniture could evolve alongside the university's changing research needs.

The design strategy centered on creating seamless transitions between formal and informal learning environments. We incorporated UCI's signature royal blue throughout the space, complemented by vibrant, textural finishes that would energize researchers and students while reinforcing the university's collaborative spirit. Every piece was chosen not just for its individual function, but for how it would contribute to the larger ecosystem of interdisciplinary exchange. From flexible seating arrangements in social areas to specialized solutions for laboratory environments, our furniture selections were designed to support the spontaneous interactions and focused research that drive scientific innovation.

The Results
200,000
square feet of interdisciplinary research space transformed to support collaboration across multiple scientific disciplines
6
distinct space types furnished, from specialized laboratories to informal collaboration areas and administrative offices
