The Challenge

Understanding what drives the need for change

When UCLA's Psychology Tower received a transformational $30 million gift from the Anthony and Jeanne Pritzker Family Foundation in January 2020, the university faced an exciting yet complex challenge. The tower, designed by celebrated architect Paul Revere Williams and completed in 1967, had remained largely unchanged for over five decades. While the building possessed undeniable architectural heritage, it lacked the collaborative spaces and modern classrooms essential for today's psychology research and education.

The psychology department needed spaces that would support groundbreaking research in areas ranging from anxiety and depression to neuroscience and human relationships. More critically, they required an environment capable of attracting and retaining world-class faculty and students to maintain their position as one of the nation's top psychology programs. The renovation would need to honor Williams' original mid-century design while creating the functional, inspiring spaces that modern academic excellence demands.

Our Approach

How we brought the vision to life

Tangram partnered with CO Architects to furnish the completely transformed Pritzker Hall, approaching the project with deep respect for both the building's architectural legacy and its future academic mission. Our team focused on four key areas: private offices, cutting-edge research laboratories, active learning classrooms, and dynamic collaboration spaces. The furniture selection process balanced contemporary functionality with careful attention to the building's historic mid-century character.

The design strategy celebrated the building's original architectural elements, including the dramatic exposed structural waffle slab and elegant marble-clad walls in the new double-height lobby. Our furniture choices complemented these features while supporting the diverse needs of psychology research and education. Every piece was selected to enhance both the aesthetic integrity of Williams' design and the practical requirements of modern academic work, creating spaces where form and function work seamlessly together.
