The Challenge

Understanding what drives the need for change

The Writers Guild of America West found themselves at a crossroads in 2017. Their headquarters on West Third Street, perfectly positioned across from Los Angeles' bustling Farmers Market and The Grove, had served them well, but the four-story building no longer supported their evolving needs. The space lacked clear definition in how areas were used, workflow felt disjointed, and functionality throughout the facility had become a daily frustration for members and staff alike.

Rather than relocate from their prime location, the Guild made a bold decision to completely reimagine their workspace. They needed meeting spaces that could adapt to different group sizes and purposes, office environments that prioritized employee comfort and personalization, and a comprehensive solution that wouldn't disrupt their critical daily operations. The challenge was substantial: how do you transform an entire four-floor headquarters while maintaining business continuity for one of Hollywood's most important professional organizations?

Our Approach

How we brought the vision to life

Tangram understood that this wasn't just about new furniture and technology—it was about creating a workspace that would honor the Guild's mission while empowering their people to do their best work. The design partnership began with developing a strategic four-phase renovation plan that would allow the Guild to upgrade on a rolling four-month schedule, ensuring minimal disruption to members, staff, and guests throughout the process.

The transformation focused on three core principles: flexibility, comfort, and connection. Tangram specified height-adjustable workstations that could be personalized to each user, reconfigurable meeting spaces with comfortable lounge seating and mobile elements, and state-of-the-art presentation technology including 4K displays and wireless collaboration tools. Glass wall systems from Muraflex created visual openness while maintaining acoustic privacy, and advanced audiovisual solutions transformed their 200-seat multi-purpose room into a dynamic space for large gatherings and events. Every decision was made with careful consideration of how it would impact daily workflows and support the creative collaboration that drives the entertainment industry.
