Scientists from the University of Cambridge and Argonne National Laboratory in the US claim to have created an ultra-thin membrane made from a new nanoporous material that permits mechanical forces to pass through it while blocking the flow of water. The team has developed a membrane made with CMS, a nanoporous material with a diameter of less than 10 nanometres. One atom-thick graphene is impermeable to gases as well as to liquids. It will permit the passage of protons but not larger ions. The CMS membrane relies on water transport channels through the carbon matrix, which are responsible for preventing the flow of water and larger ions while enabling the smaller protons to pass through.
