## Creating Flexible Learning Environments: USC Village Project Showcase

The University of Southern California's ambitious USC Village development demonstrates how thoughtful furniture curation can transform educational spaces into vibrant community hubs. This $700-million project spans 1.25 million square feet across six buildings, creating a living environment that supports both academic success and social connection.

## Understanding the Vision

USC's goals extended beyond traditional dormitory design. The university sought to create spaces that would foster collaboration, encourage study, and provide inviting areas where students could genuinely connect with their peers. This vision required furniture solutions that could adapt to diverse student needs throughout the day.

**Key project objectives included:** - Supporting various learning styles and postures - Enabling flexible space configurations - Creating inviting social environments - Accommodating high-traffic usage patterns

## The Design Process: Learning Through Testing

The furniture selection process began in 2013 with existing USC spaces serving as testing grounds. Students actively participated in evaluating different furniture lines and configurations, providing invaluable feedback that shaped the final design decisions.

"We learned from all those experiences and applied the information we've gathered to these five incredible new buildings," explains Tangram Sales Executive Lupe Morfin. This user-centered approach ensured that design decisions were grounded in actual student behavior and preferences.

## Strategic Furniture Solutions

The project required furniture for diverse spaces, each with unique functional requirements:

**Outdoor Areas:** Weather-resistant pieces that encourage informal gatherings and outdoor study sessions

**Lobbies and Common Spaces:** Welcoming furniture that creates natural conversation areas while maintaining traffic flow

**Study Environments:** A mix of individual and group study furniture supporting different learning preferences

**Dining Hall:** Custom solutions including gothic-style seating that complements the space's architectural features

## Flexibility as a Design Principle

One of the project's standout features is its emphasis on adaptable furniture arrangements. Pieces can be reconfigured throughout the day to accommodate changing needs – from morning study sessions to evening social gatherings. This flexibility maximizes space utility while giving students ownership over their environment.

The furniture mix accommodates various postures and work styles, recognizing that today's students don't learn or socialize in just one way. This approach creates more inclusive spaces that serve diverse student populations effectively.

## Project Impact and Scale

USC Village represents the largest development in South Los Angeles history, housing approximately 2,500 students while generating around 800 jobs for the local community. The medieval Tuscan village aesthetic creates a distinctive campus landmark that extends USC's footprint by nearly one-third.

The success of this project demonstrates how furniture selection directly impacts educational outcomes. By prioritizing student input and flexible design solutions, USC Village creates an environment where academic and social success can flourish naturally.

## Lessons for Commercial Design Professionals

The USC Village project offers several key insights for designers working on educational and mixed-use developments:

**User Testing Matters:** Involving end users in the design process produces more effective solutions than assumptions alone.

**Plan for Change:** Flexible furniture arrangements extend space functionality and accommodate evolving needs.

**Mix Functionality:** Combining different furniture styles and configurations serves diverse user preferences more effectively.

**Think Beyond Aesthetics:** While visual appeal matters, functionality and adaptability often determine long-term project success.

This collaboration between Tangram Interiors, Harley Ellis Devereaux, and USC demonstrates how strategic furniture curation can transform large-scale developments into thriving communities that serve their users' evolving needs.
