Califia Farms Pays Homage to its Roots with its Brand New Arts District Headquarters
Understanding what drives the need for change
Califia Farms, the innovative Los Angeles-based producer of plant-based dairy alternatives, needed a new 30,000 square foot headquarters that would authentically reflect their agricultural roots and sustainable values. With over 50 employees requiring diverse workspace solutions, the company sought an environment that could seamlessly accommodate everything from large-scale boardroom meetings to intimate collaboration sessions.
The challenge extended beyond mere functionality. Califia Farms wanted their physical space to embody the same thoughtful approach they brought to their products—celebrating natural materials, honoring their agricultural heritage, and creating flexible environments where their team could thrive. They needed custom solutions that would distinguish their workspace while providing the practical infrastructure necessary for a growing company in the competitive plant-based food industry.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram and Studio Other partnered with architecture firm SLAM to develop a comprehensive design strategy rooted in Califia Farms' agricultural identity. The centerpiece became a custom 20-person boardroom table crafted with a butcher block surface that showcased natural wood's inherent beauty, supported by a steel base designed to echo the machinery found in coffee bean fields—a direct homage to the company's industry roots.
Throughout the space, the design team prioritized material authenticity and functional flexibility. They created nine custom flip-top café tables finished in durable oak laminate, positioned strategically between the boardroom and gathering spaces to accommodate both daily use and special events. The workstation areas featured carefully selected neutral browns and tans, while private offices incorporated height-adjustable desks and collaborative writing surfaces. In the reception area, earthy tones were punctuated with vibrant blue and tomato red accent pieces, creating an welcoming environment that balanced professionalism with Califia's approachable brand personality.
