Understanding what drives the need for change
When a major technology company decided to expand their presence to Manhattan, they faced the unique opportunity of translating their successful Los Angeles office culture to the heart of New York City. Having previously collaborated with Gensler on their West Coast headquarters in 2020, Tangram was tasked with reimagining design elements that had captured the spirit of LA for an entirely different urban landscape. The challenge lay not just in the scale—232,000 square feet across the top five floors of a 58-story tower—but in creating an authentic New York experience that would resonate with 1,000 employees while maintaining the company's established creative identity.
The Manhattan location presented both extraordinary opportunities and complex design puzzles. With panoramic views stretching from the Empire State Building to the Freedom Tower, the space demanded a design approach that would celebrate these iconic vistas while creating intimate, functional work environments. The team needed to develop a furniture strategy that would complement Gensler's architectural vision, which featured playful nods to New York culture through LED installations depicting pizza, yellow cabs, and the Statue of Liberty, while ensuring every piece contributed to the high-energy, collaborative atmosphere the company was known for.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram's approach centered on creating a vibrant, color-driven furniture strategy that would seamlessly integrate with Gensler's New York-themed architectural elements. Rather than simply transplanting West Coast aesthetics, the team developed a sophisticated palette that celebrated the energy and diversity of Manhattan. Each space received careful consideration for both function and visual impact, with Steelcase Series 1 task chairs anchoring the open workplace areas while custom lounge furniture created dynamic social hubs throughout the floors.
The team's most innovative strategy involved color coordination that responded directly to architectural graphics and spatial themes. In the huddle rooms, Viccarbe Maarten chairs were carefully selected to match each room's unique color scheme and graphic identity, creating a spectrum that ranged from sophisticated neutrals to bold neons. The lounge furniture strategy embraced organic forms and playful shapes that nestled seamlessly into architectural details, ensuring that every piece felt intentionally placed rather than merely functional. This approach created a cohesive environment where furniture became an extension of the architectural narrative, amplifying the space's connection to New York's creative energy while maximizing the spectacular city views that served as the ultimate backdrop.

Maarten Chair
Swivel chair for the home and for public facilities. Its powder coated steel tube structure and its carefully made, elegant, upholstered seat recall the classics of the’70s. Maarten is available in a wide variety of base and seat finishes to fit with all kind of environments. Swivel or 4 legs calibrated steel structure powder coated in thermoreinforced polyester in black, white, fluorescent orange and altea blue. Moulded shell with 3D plywood covered in shape-holding polyurethane foam and polyester fiber. Fixed upholstery covering available in the classic and plain version. The swivel version is not stackable, but up to 4 units of the 4 leg version can be stacked. Clear polypropylene injection pads on the swivel base.
