Understanding what drives the need for change
When DeviantArt reached out to Tangram through their design partner Wolcott in early 2019, the world's largest online art community was at a pivotal moment. After nearly two decades of connecting millions of artists worldwide, the company needed a physical workspace in Los Angeles that could match the energy and creativity of their digital platform. Their existing space wasn't supporting their growing team or their deeply collaborative culture that had made them a beloved destination for artists, photographers, and videographers.
The challenge wasn't just about finding more room—it was about creating an environment that would honor their artistic community while supporting the health and wellness of their employees. DeviantArt's leadership understood that their workspace needed to be as dynamic and inspiring as the content their users create daily. They envisioned an open, flexible environment where their team could collaborate seamlessly while maintaining the physical comfort needed for long creative sessions.
How we brought the vision to life
Working alongside Wolcott, our design partnership centered on creating a workspace that would feel like an extension of DeviantArt's online community—open, welcoming, and bursting with creative energy. We focused on flexibility as the foundation, specifying height-adjustable Steelcase Ology benching systems throughout the 15,000 square foot space. These workstations could adapt to each employee's needs throughout the day, supporting both focused work and spontaneous collaboration.
Recognizing that DeviantArt's walls would be filled with bold, vibrant artwork from their community, we took a deliberately understated approach to the supporting furniture. We selected ergonomic Steelcase Gesture chairs and sleek ancillary pieces with organic shapes and neutral tones—elements that would provide comfort and functionality while allowing the art to take center stage. Every piece was chosen to enhance rather than compete with the creative expression that defines DeviantArt's identity.
