Open Loft Style Office Captures the Creativity of its Hair Brands
Understanding what drives the need for change
When Henkel Beauty Care Hair Professional North America decided to bring four distinct hair brands under one roof in 2018, they faced a complex puzzle. The company needed to relocate from multiple locations into a single 50,000 square foot space in Culver City while maintaining the unique identity of each brand. The challenge wasn't just about finding more room—it was about creating an environment where four different brand cultures could coexist and thrive.
The new loft-style space offered tremendous potential for openness and creativity, but Henkel had specific requirements. They wanted to preserve their existing furniture standards that employees were familiar with while designing spaces that would support both internal collaboration and customer engagement. The space needed to feel cohesive yet allow each hair brand to express its distinct personality and working style.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram partnered closely with Shubin Donaldson to create a furniture strategy that would honor both unity and individuality. The team selected Steelcase and Vitra seating systems as the foundation, choosing pieces that could adapt to various functions—from focused private work to dynamic team collaboration—while maintaining the sleek, clean aesthetic that would complement the loft architecture.
Recognizing that great workspaces extend beyond traditional boundaries, Tangram also designed custom upholstery elements and curated outdoor furniture for the balconies. Every piece was chosen to support the open-workspace philosophy while subtly reinforcing each brand's character. The design process focused on creating distinct zones that would naturally guide different types of work and interaction, from employee collaboration to customer presentations, ensuring the space could serve multiple purposes without feeling fragmented.
