Understanding what drives the need for change
When Hulu first reached out to Tangram in 2009, they weren't just another tech startup looking for office furniture. They were pioneers with a bold vision: treating employee wellness as a core business investment rather than an afterthought. At a time when most companies still viewed height-adjustable desks as luxury items, Hulu wanted to make them standard for every employee. This forward-thinking approach reflected their culture of innovation and their understanding that great content comes from teams who feel supported in their workspace.
As Hulu grew from startup to streaming powerhouse, their spatial needs evolved dramatically. The company needed a design partner who could scale with them—from their creative headquarters in Santa Monica to regional offices nationwide, and eventually to their first-ever 24-hour call center in San Antonio. Each location presented unique challenges: the creative energy required in their HQ, the operational demands of round-the-clock customer service, and the need to maintain Hulu's distinctive culture across vastly different work environments.
How we brought the vision to life
Our partnership with Hulu began with a simple commitment to quality and reliability that has deepened over more than a decade. Working alongside Steelcase, we developed comprehensive workplace solutions that could adapt to Hulu's diverse operational needs. For their Santa Monica headquarters and ongoing expansions, we focused on creating flexible environments that could support both collaborative creative work and focused individual tasks, always maintaining their wellness-first approach with height-adjustable workstations as the foundation.
The San Antonio call center presented an entirely different design challenge. Operating 24/7 meant creating spaces that would remain comfortable and functional across multiple shifts, with employees spending extended periods at their workstations. We designed over 500 height-adjustable workspaces specifically configured for the demands of customer service work, ensuring ergonomic support during long shifts while maintaining the connectivity and efficiency essential for call center operations. Our approach balanced operational requirements with human comfort, proving that even the most demanding work environments can prioritize employee wellbeing.
