Understanding what drives the need for change
Little Dreamers Pediatrics in Clovis, CA was envisioned as a completely new, ground-up environment—a 5,000-square-foot pediatric dental clinic designed to break away from traditional clinical settings. The goal was clear: create a space that feels inspiring, fun, imaginative, and sensory-driven for young patients while still supporting efficient clinical care.
The client needed an environment that could ease anxiety for children, engage them through play, and create a memorable, positive experience from the moment they walk in. At the same time, the space had to function seamlessly for a growing team (0–50 staff), balancing clinical performance, durability, and ease of maintenance.
Because this was a brand-new installation, every element—from furniture to finishes—had to work together cohesively. This also presented an opportunity for Tangram to take a more holistic role, with Liz Charney leading both interior design and furniture curation to ensure a unified vision.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram Interiors delivered a fully integrated solution, combining interior design, finish selection, and furniture specification to create a cohesive, immersive pediatric experience.
The design concept centered on playful engagement and sensory interaction, using color, form, and furniture to transform the clinic into a child-friendly environment. Upon entry, patients are welcomed into a vibrant reception and waiting space anchored by an interactive activity wall inspired by Montessori-style play and classic board games. This wall incorporates tactile elements and visual games, paired with soft seating and whimsical features like an oversized dog bench to encourage exploration and reduce anxiety .
The waiting area further reinforces this approach with colorful ottomans, playful shapes, and varied seating options, allowing children to move, play, or relax while caregivers remain comfortable .
Throughout the clinic, Liz extended this playful narrative into the architecture itself. A standout feature is the “rainbow” hallway with colorful arches, creating a memorable transition through the space and reinforcing a sense of imagination and discovery.
Clinical areas were designed to balance fun with function. Dental bays and hygiene areas incorporate durable, easy-to-clean materials alongside bright, engaging graphics and color blocking. Custom millwork, integrated storage, and thoughtfully selected seating—such as Blu Dot chairs and SitOnIt task seating—support both staff efficiency and patient comfort .
Furniture selections from Smith System, Steelcase Campfire, SitOnIt, and Bludot were curated to align with the design vision—offering flexibility, durability, and a cohesive aesthetic across all spaces, including consult rooms, break areas, and support zones.
