Understanding what drives the need for change
When Morrison & Foerster, the elite international law firm known as 'MoFo,' decided to reimagine their Los Angeles workspace, they faced a distinctive challenge. As the most prestigious law firm in the San Francisco region with nearly 1,000 attorneys across 16 global offices, MoFo needed their LA space to embody the same level of excellence that attracts Fortune 500 clients like Apple, Intel, and Bank of America. The firm's diverse practice areas—from high-stakes patent litigation to complex corporate mergers—each demanded specialized environments that could handle everything from confidential IP discussions to collaborative deal-making sessions.
The existing space wasn't living up to MoFo's reputation or supporting their attorneys' varied work styles. With practice groups spanning intellectual property, securities law, and business restructuring, the firm needed a workspace that could seamlessly transition from intimate client consultations to larger team collaborations. The challenge was creating an environment sophisticated enough for Lucasfilm executives while functional enough for late-night due diligence sessions, all while maintaining the confidentiality and professionalism that elite legal practice demands.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram Interiors approached this project as a study in sophisticated functionality, understanding that every design decision needed to support both MoFo's prestigious brand and their attorneys' demanding work requirements. Our team conducted extensive consultations with partners across different practice groups to understand how intellectual property lawyers work differently from M&A specialists, and how corporate restructuring teams collaborate compared to securities attorneys. This research informed a design strategy that balanced premium aesthetics with practical workspace solutions.
The design partnership centered on creating distinct zones within the office that could adapt to different types of legal work while maintaining visual cohesion throughout. We selected materials and finishes that would impress discerning clients while standing up to the intense use patterns of a busy law firm. Strategic layout planning ensured that confidential meetings could happen simultaneously with collaborative sessions, while technology integration supported the complex documentation and presentation needs that come with representing some of the world's most innovative companies. Every element was chosen to reinforce MoFo's position as a leader in legal services while creating an environment where their attorneys could perform at their highest level.
