The Challenge

Understanding what drives the need for change

For four decades, Options for Learning had been quietly transforming lives across Southern California, providing free and affordable childcare and educational programs to help families break the cycle of poverty. As their impact grew to serve children from birth through age 14, their team had expanded to over 180 dedicated staff members scattered across inadequate spaces that no longer reflected their mission or supported their ambitious goals.

The organization faced a pivotal moment: they had secured a sprawling 26,000-square-foot space in West Covina for their new corporate headquarters, but it sat completely vacant—a blank canvas that needed to become a vibrant, functional home for their growing team. The challenge wasn't just about filling empty rooms with furniture; it was about creating an environment that would embody their commitment to children and families while supporting the diverse work styles of educators, administrators, and support staff who dedicate their careers to building stronger communities.

Our Approach

How we brought the vision to life

Tangram partnered with KKIA architects to craft a furniture strategy that would honor Options for Learning's child-centered mission while addressing the practical needs of a dynamic nonprofit workforce. Understanding that this organization serves as both corporate headquarters and community beacon, we developed solutions that balanced professional functionality with the warmth and energy that defines their brand.

Our design partnership centered on creating purposeful spaces that support different work modes—from focused administrative tasks to collaborative program planning sessions. We integrated wellness-focused amenities including dedicated mothers' rooms and café spaces, recognizing that supporting employee well-being directly impacts the families they serve. Throughout the space, we wove in vibrant accent furnishings that drew inspiration from the organization's logo and color palette, ensuring every corner would remind staff of the joyful, hopeful work they do each day. The result was a cohesive environment where form truly follows the function of empowering families and strengthening communities.
