SAP Hanahaus
Human-Centric Design for a Collaborative and Innovative Creative Space
Understanding what drives the need for change
SAP faced an ambitious vision: transforming a historic landmark in Newport Beach's Marina Lido Village into something unprecedented. The multinational software corporation wanted to create their first dual-purpose space that would house both a private research and development center for company employees and a public coworking environment called HanaHaus. This 16,000-square-foot Innovation Center needed to serve two distinct audiences simultaneously while maintaining the security and functionality each required.
The challenge extended beyond simply dividing space between private and public areas. SAP envisioned HanaHaus as a beacon for Orange County's creative community—a place where thinkers, makers, and innovators could collaborate and connect. The space also needed to transform into an event venue capable of hosting workshops, lectures, and TED-style talks. Creating this flexible, multi-modal environment within a historic building required careful consideration of how different user groups would move through and utilize the space.
How we brought the vision to life
The design team from H. Hendy and Tangram embraced SAP's own design thinking methodology, applying a human-centered approach to every programming decision. Rather than starting with preconceived notions about workspace layout, they conducted extensive research into how people actually use collaborative spaces. This process involved creating detailed journey maps that tracked the movement patterns and behaviors of both SAP employees and potential HanaHaus visitors.
The insights gathered from this analysis informed every aspect of the space planning. The team programmed each area based on real user needs rather than traditional office conventions. They designed a two-story volume with open seating as the heart of the space, surrounded by conference rooms, focus areas, and on-demand workspaces of varying sizes. This configuration ensures that whether someone needs quiet concentration or dynamic collaboration, they can find an appropriate environment within steps of the main activity hub.
