Transitional Home for Women and Children
A comfortable, safe and cheerful space for women and children experiencing homelessness
Understanding what drives the need for change
The Lee and Krystyna Jaimeson Transitional Home in Bakersfield faced a unique design challenge that went far beyond typical furniture selection. This facility serves women and children experiencing homelessness, providing not just shelter but comprehensive support including education, recovery services, medical care, and case management. The space needed to function as much more than temporary housing—it had to create an environment that would help residents envision and work toward stable, independent living.
As Krystyna Jamieson explained, the goal was to provide a sustainable, safe, and happy option that would give residents an idea of what a healthy home looks like. The facility required furnishings that could withstand the demands of a high-traffic institutional environment while maintaining the warmth and comfort of a residential setting. Every piece needed to contribute to a sense of safety and hope, supporting the Mission's emphasis on providing lasting recovery skills rather than just temporary relief.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram developed a comprehensive furniture strategy centered on contract-grade pieces with residential aesthetics. The team carefully curated selections from trusted manufacturers including Steelcase's West Elm collection, Coalesse, National, Hon, Sit On It, Global, and BluDot. Each piece was chosen not only for durability but for its ability to create an inviting, home-like atmosphere that would help residents feel comfortable and secure.
The design palette focused on modern comfort through neutral tones accented with calming blues throughout the facility. This cohesive color scheme helped create visual continuity while maintaining the fresh, bright environment essential for the facility's mission. The furniture selection spanned every area of the facility, from private offices and meeting spaces to the lobby, kitchen, and resident rooms, ensuring that the sense of comfort and safety extended throughout the entire building.
