The Trade Desk - San Francisco
A beautiful residential-style space that draws design inspiration from the city
Understanding what drives the need for change
As The Trade Desk's San Francisco operations flourished, their smaller office could no longer contain their ambitious growth. The rapidly expanding team of over 100 employees needed a new home that would honor both their innovative culture and the vibrant spirit of San Francisco itself. The challenge wasn't just about finding more space—it was about creating an environment that would inspire their people while capturing the unique energy of the city they called home.
Located in the heart of the Financial District, their new 21,500 square foot space represented more than just an office expansion. The Trade Desk envisioned a workplace that would blur the lines between professional sophistication and residential comfort, creating a setting where employees could thrive, collaborate naturally, and feel genuinely connected to their work and each other. They needed a space that could adapt to their dynamic work style while maintaining the welcoming, human-centered culture that had fueled their success.
How we brought the vision to life
Building on our established partnership with The Trade Desk across multiple locations, Tangram collaborated closely with HOK architecture to craft a workspace transformation that felt more like a thoughtfully curated home than a traditional office. Our design strategy centered on residential-inspired furniture that delivered contract-grade durability without sacrificing comfort or style. We selected pieces with rich colors and varied textures that would create distinct zones throughout the space, each serving a specific purpose in the employee experience.
The design partnership resulted in carefully planned environments: a serene wellness room featuring calming neutrals and soft lighting for decompression, an open office area anchored by a striking blue sectional that encouraged informal collaboration, and convertible meeting spaces that could transform from intimate discussions to large group gatherings. We integrated playful elements like shuffleboard tables near sprawling windows and created inviting banquette seating that could serve as independent work areas or casual meeting spots. Every furniture selection was made with The Trade Desk's input, ensuring that each piece not only served a functional purpose but also reinforced their culture of bringing people together.
