Understanding what drives the need for change
When temperature control innovator Ember prepared to leave their scrappy startup environment for a new 25,000-square-foot headquarters in Westlake Village, they faced a defining moment. The company, founded by serial entrepreneur Clay Alexander to revolutionize how people experience food and drink, had outgrown their makeshift office setup with furniture hastily selected by their Chief of Staff. Now, with their groundbreaking temperature control technology gaining market traction, they needed a workspace that would reflect their design-led brand identity and support their ambitious growth plans.
The vision was clear but challenging to execute: create a modern headquarters that would embody warm minimalism while incorporating natural elements, rich textures, and strategic pops of color. The space needed to serve multiple functions across nine distinct areas, from an innovation center and product museum to collaborative workspaces and executive offices. Most importantly, the new headquarters had to tell Ember's story of thoughtful innovation and premium design, moving far beyond typical startup aesthetics to establish them as industry leaders.
How we brought the vision to life
Tangram collaborated closely with Studio Blitz to develop a comprehensive furniture strategy that would bring Ember's vision to life across every corner of their new headquarters. Rather than pursuing a one-size-fits-all solution, the team carefully curated pieces from multiple manufacturers, ensuring each space received furniture that matched both its specific function and the overarching design narrative. The approach emphasized warm minimalism through natural materials and textures, while bold accent colors were strategically placed to energize key collaborative zones.
The centerpiece of the design partnership became a series of custom millwork pieces created in collaboration with Valentine Industries. These bespoke elements, including the CEO and Executive Assistant desks, a striking reception desk, and a dramatic 13-foot boomerang conference table, served as signature moments throughout the space. Each custom piece was designed to reflect Ember's commitment to precision and innovation, creating focal points that would inspire both employees and visitors while reinforcing the brand's design-forward identity.
